This site and its services exist as a service to the global tai chi community. It exists to serve students and teachers by providing resources and information, and by facilitating the communication a sharing between teachers and students of the various styles of tai chi (taijiquan)
The benefits of tai chi (taijiquan) are vast and deep! The variations are equally diverse.
But for all the differences between styles, teachers and students share much in common. In spite of the myriad different reasons that bring people to learn and practise the art, the art remains fundamentally the same. It does not matter whether a particular school exists primarily to improve the health and wellbeing of the elderly and infirm or primarily to train younger students in practical martial skill, or to enlighten all generations regarding the infinite potential of the human mind, body, and spirit.
Some of the most beautiful experiences one can have as a tai chi player, are in attending events where students and teachers of all styles, ages, cultures, creeds, skill levels, and motivations, gather to share, learn, and further the potential of both the students and the art in its many forms. This site exists to encourage such sharing by promoting such events and by strengthening the online tai chi community.
Tai chi is an expression of universal truths. These speak to the very nature of human struggle and potential. Students of all cultures, religions and philosophies make use of tai chi principles. The principles themselves are no more exclusive to a particular ideology than breathing, thinking, standing, moving, or cultivating awareness. Regardless of the cultural and philosophical origins of the art of tai chi, the art itself continues to be a unifier rather than a divider.
The mission is to serve as a resource for tai chi teachers and students of all styles, by facilitating interaction between artists of various styles and to make it easier for prospective students to find teachers and events in their own neighbourhood and around the world. To this end we offer these core features:
Tai Chi Journal / Blog:
Articles by and for members of the global tai chi community, in any language. If you wish to submit an article of your own, or to recommend an article by someone else, please let us know. We prefer original articles, but will consider all submissions.
World Tai Chi School Directory
Very few tai chi schools are large commercial endeavours. Most tai chi schools are small, sometimes very small. In fact, there are many highly qualified teachers who have fewer than 10 students. Large schools (some with more than 1000 students) have their own websites and marketing staff. But there are many smaller schools, some with only 1 or 2 students, who have much to offer the community, but with no website, phone listing, or budget, are difficult to find. While some low-profile teachers enjoy their isolation, others simply lack the resources to grow their student base or to engage the larger community. The directory enables local people and traveling tai chi players the ability to find and connect with tai chi schools wherever they are.
Add and Edit your own listing
The World Tai Chi School Directory offers registered members the option to publish and edit a detailed listing, including their curriculum, background, and teaching locations. A single school may have several teaching locations, each of which can be noted with a pin on the global map.
At one time, the World Tai Chi School Directory grew to include approximately 1500 locations in 90 countries. This has been reduced as a result of ongoing efforts to ensure accuracy.
NOTE: There is no certification or vetting required in order to add a teacher or school to the directory. However, we reserve the right to remove listings that abuse the privilege or which misrepresent credentials.
As tai chi becomes increasingly popular, and as the tai chi community becomes more mature and integrated, we see an increasing number of events that are of interest to a wider range of students.
- Local events include demonstrations, grand openings, ceremonies, tuishou free-play zones, etc.
- Regional and global events include conferences and symposia, tournaments and competitions, seminars, workshops, etc.
The event calendar lists all such events (colour-coded according to region).
Add your event
All registered members may submit and event to the calendar free of charge, pending approval by the moderators or administrator.
Tai Chi Forum
Forum solution pending
The challenges of maintaining an online forum seem at times to be insurmountable. There are expensive solutions that work some of the time, but conflicts with the other parts of the site have so-far made it impossible to keep a forum up for long. The quest for a secure and functional forum solution is ongoing.
