The first 2 parts of “Grasp the Bird’s Tail” are “Peng” and “Lu” or “Ward off” and “Roll Back” These are the “heaven and earth” of tai chi. Every other technique and movement contains these two qualities.
Peng corresponds to “heaven” and Lu corresponds to “earth”. In structure, application and method, they are two sides of the same coin.
Peng is an upward and expansive energy that cannot exist without Lu.
Lu is the rolling and neutralizing quality that enables peng to expand.
Peng is like an ocean supporting a boat. Lu is like a log floating in the water.
